Randon T. McMaster Memorial Scholarship Award

Randy McMaster
1974 – 2023

Awarded to an aspiring or active commercial pilot who is dedicated to the commercial ride operation and a steadfast supporter of the mission of HHSC.

For Randon “Randy” McMaster, Harris Hill was his second home. Randy was an active junior member in the 1980’s and 90’s. He supported Harris Hill’s operation as well as competition soaring throughout the country while crewing and touring with Charlie Spratt.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1993. During his 26 years of active-duty service, Randy came back to Harris Hill and visited whenever possible. Throughout his life, he shared his love of soaring with others and encouraged all he met to try it. Upon retirement from the military in 2018, he moved his family back to Elmira and introduced his children to soaring.

When Randy was diagnosed with cancer in 2020, the Harris Hill community rallied around him by supporting his love of flying. Harris Hill and soaring were a respite for Randy during this time. Despite the limitations caused by his declining health, he set personal soaring goals and achieved them for as long as he was physically able.

The Randon T. McMaster Memorial Scholarship Award, established in 2024, will be presented to a member who is steadfast in supporting the mission of Harris Hill Soaring Corporation. The annual $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to an aspiring or active commercial pilot who is dedicated to the commercial ride operation which Randy considered the life blood of our club.
