HHSC Fees and Service

Cost to Fly

Cost to fly is calculated in the following manner:

Hook up fee + Charge per 1,000 feet + glider rental per hour = Cost to Fly

The minimum glider rental time is 20 minutes.

Example: A Senior Active member taking a 2,000 foot tow and flying an ASK-21 for 1 hour would pay:  $8.00 hook up + $22.00 tow + $11.00 glider rental = $41.00.  (Compare that to the $90 per hour cost of Super Cub rental and you can see why soaring is one of the most economical ways to fly -particularly if you fly for lengthy periods of time).

New members pay a non-refundable $200 initiation fee and $89 (annually) for membership in the National Soaring Museum and Soaring Society of America.

Junior rates are subsidized by club dues and rates as part of our education mission and pre-solo juniors pay just $7.00 per flight with no other rental or tow fees.  Even after solo, Junior members pay a substantially reduced rate per flight.  If this is not the cheapest way to learn how to fly, please alert us.  Although HHSC subsidizes the rates for Junior members, we believe that the benefit to the individual far outweighs the cost to our club members.  Juniors learn a rare and unique skill that teaches them maturity, judgement and responsibility, all skills that prepare them to operate in an adult world.

Visiting Pilots

Harris Hill often hosts visiting pilots, either individually, or in groups during contests or meets.  Visiting pilots may fly at Harris Hill, following a required safety check-ride.  See the Guest category, below, for fees and rates if you plan to visit Harris Hill.

Temporary flying privileges – for pilots planning to spend a longer, but temporary, period of time in the area.  Please contact our Secretary or V.P. of Operations.

Planning to fly at Harris Hill?  See this page for an overview of the airspace we share with KELM, and topography of the surrounding area.

Flying Season

Scheduled soaring season is from approximately the first weekend of April through the last weekend of October.  During those times, members are assigned once or twice a month to a four hour duty schedule on a Saturday or Sunday from 10am-6pm.  During summer months (usually late July-late August/early September), summer operations are staffed weekdays from 10am-6pm each day.  During winter months, flying can and does take place, but it is ad-hoc.  If the weather is good and members arrange it, flying will take place.

Additionally, on Thanksgiving weekend (Fri/Sat) HHSC hosts the Snowbird contest.  On New Year’s day, if the weather is good, we will often fly as a way to ring in the new year.  Arrangements for ad-hoc flying often take place via our email reflector -the Harris Hill Freelist.  Contact the webmaster to be placed on the Freelist.

Part of HHSC’s mission is to educate people about soaring and the pre-solo junior program, the best deal in soaring, is designed to encourage our juniors to learn to fly by subsidizing their training.  We believe the cost to HHSC’s membership is far outweighed by the maturity, judgement, and life skills that our juniors learn during their time in our program.
